The UNLV triathlon club has been an amazing opportunity for me here at UNLV. In this club, I have not only been able to better myself as a person, but also expand my knowledge of the sport and meet some awesome people along the way. I see myself continuing to grow as a triathlete, and it is my hope to share the love I have for this sport with others in the future.

My name is Joshua, and I am a first-year student at UNLV majoring in mathematical sciences with a focus on actuarial sciences. Originally from Las Vegas but raised in Mexico, I have always had a passion for sports. I started boxing at 9, and running became a part of my daily routine due to the sport’s cardio demands. After high school, I returned to the U.S. after losing motivation for boxing; I turned to running. I completed the Las Vegas Marathon, which reignited my love for sports and led me to the UNLV Triathlon Club. Though I did not know how to swim, the Triathlon Club helped me improve my swimming skills, and I competed in the Rage triathlon in Las Vegas, being 4th place in my age category; in only 2 months, I learned swimming and 4th place. The club has taught me valuable lessons in perseverance, teamwork, and problem-solving, helping me learn that no goal is too big if you’re willing to work and ask for help. Balancing academics and sports is challenging, especially given the costs involved in college. Being part of this fantastic community has given me a feeling of belonging and discipline, and I am really proud to be part of.
